[...] This is the second in a series of posts on how Red will be used in various market segments. The first post provided a brief introduction. This post will contrast the “boutique” production company model (which is essentially how I’ll be using Red) with the “break the bank” self-fundend filmmaker model of the past. The next will compare the “boutique” model with the owner-operator model. Then I’ll move into discussing higher budget usage of the camera. [...]

I am in the exact same boat as Clint. I was looking to buy an HVX package, but budgeted out it was about 12,000 for everything I wanted. Then I noticed the Red banner on DVXuser.com, did a little research and decided to wait. As the pricing became evident it seemed to me to be a worthy risk for something that could put me in a different league in terms of options as a shooter. I could not afford a varicam package, let alone a HDX900, but I could just about squeeze out a red camera, some glass and other accessories. I have been shooting standard (DVX100) for a while, and the demand for HD has been exponential. I think the "boutique" term Chris refers to is in fact pretty applicable to my situattion. I will produce personal projects and shoot for my clients.

I'm getting Red One #351 because it will create beautiful images (if it doesn't I'll be taking that 110% refund) and because I can (barely) afford it. I'm a story teller and this camera will allow me to tell those stories better. I really hope that it will allow me to create media that I can sell... but if not then it will still be beautiful and I won't have paid out the cost of an average 2500 square foot house... just an entry level sports car.

Maybe I'll be kicking myself when the 2009 Camaro convertible shows up but that is the story of Clint.
